ActiveState Updates Komodo IDE

ActiveState released Komodo IDE 4.2, the newest version of its multiplatform, multilanguage integrated development environment (IDE) for advanced Web development.

This release includes an auto-update feature to ensure users always have the latest version. In addition, it adds bug fixes and improved support for dynamic languages. Developers can also use soft characters to automatically insert closing brackets, braces and parentheses.

Version 4.2 continues Komodo IDE's support for various languages (Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby and Tcl), and for nclient-side AJAX technologies, such as CSS, HTML, JavaScript and XML.

The Komodo IDE provides developers with a multilanguage editor and debugging tools, as well as other core features, such as:

  • The ability to share project elements between multiple developers;
  • Source code control integration and project organization features;
  • Tools to create Firefox-like extensions; and
  • A customizable workspace.

ActiveState has been busy in other areas besides announcing a new Komodo IDE version. Earlier this month, the company announced an Open Komodo Project.

The Open Komodo Project aims to leverage the Komodo IDE to create an open source tool for client-side Web development integrated with the Firefox browser. ActiveState is releasing the browser-side capabilities of its Komodo Edit tool as open source code for the project. Komodo Edit is a free multilanguage editor for dynamic languages and AJAX technologies based on Komodo IDE.

If that weren't enough, ActiveState also announced the beta release of Up4, the company's first social networking application. Up4 was designed to work with the popular Facebook platform. It tells friends on the Facebook network what kinds of activities they are "up for" doing.
