GitHub Unifies Enterprise Offering, Unveils Unlimited Free Private Repos

GitHub, the huge open source-centric software development platform and source code repository now owned by Microsoft, has unveiled new goodies for the new year: a new enterprise offering and unlimited private repositories.

GitHub Enterprise is the new unified offering, combining Enterprise Cloud (previously called GitHub Business Cloud) and Enterprise Server (formerly called GitHub Enterprise).

"Organizations that want the flexibility to use GitHub in a cloud or self-hosted configuration can now access both at one per-seat price," GitHub Inc. said in a post today. "And with GitHub Connect, these products can be securely linked, providing a hybrid option so developers can work seamlessly across both environments."

Along with the simpler, unified GitHub Enterprise, the company boosted its GitHub Free service, which now comes with unlimited private repositories.

"For the first time, developers can use GitHub for their private projects with up to three collaborators per repository for free," GitHub said. "Many developers want to use private repos to apply for a job, work on a side project, or try something out in private before releasing it publicly. Starting today, those scenarios, and many more, are possible on GitHub at no cost. Public repositories are still free (of course -- no changes there) and include unlimited collaborators."

While developers can use GitHub for free for public and open source projects, the company's paid plans allow for working together across unlimited private repositories. GitHub's pricing page lists plans ranging from free to $21 per user per month. GitHub Enterprise is available in a 45-day free trial. Today's post also said GitHub Developer has been renamed GitHub Pro.

The company today also announced the ability to create pull requests from Microsoft's Visual Studio Code editor.
