Microsoft Integrates AI Assistant into Workplace Social Platform

Microsoft has integrated its AI-powered Copilot assistant into Viva Engage, the company's workplace social networking platform, as part of efforts to expand artificial intelligence capabilities across its business software suite.

The integration, announced Tuesday and rolling out to general availability, allows users to summarize conversations, search for specific posts, and receive writing assistance within the workplace collaboration tool. The feature requires a Microsoft 365 Copilot license.

The AI assistant provides context-aware responses based on whether users are viewing community discussions, individual conversations, or campaign updates. Users can request summaries of recent activity across their network or within specific communities through a single prompt.

A new "Themes Feed" feature identifies trending topics across an organization by grouping popular content and conversations. The system also offers enhanced search functionality, allowing users to locate posts by colleague, timeframe, or topic.

For content creation, Copilot can pull relevant information from Microsoft Teams and Outlook to help users draft more comprehensive updates and posts within the platform.

The move extends Microsoft's strategy of embedding AI capabilities throughout its productivity software ecosystem. The company has been integrating Copilot functionality across Microsoft 365 applications since launching the AI assistant for general business use in late 2023.

Viva Engage, formerly known as Yammer, competes with workplace communication platforms including Slack and internal social networks. Microsoft positions the tool as part of its broader Viva employee experience platform.

The integration represents Microsoft's ongoing effort to differentiate its workplace software through AI features as competition intensifies in the enterprise collaboration market.

Microsoft 365 Copilot licenses are required to access the new features. The company has not disclosed pricing details for the enhanced Engage capabilities or adoption metrics for the AI assistant across its platform suite.
