Open Source Onsen UI Mobile Framework Targets Vue.js Development

Monaca, maker of the open source Onsen UI framework for creating HTML5 hybrid and mobile Web apps, announced a release specifically targeting JavaScript development with Vue.js.

Vue.js is a hot JavaScript framework, which of late has been featured among the top trending tools on GitHub and on StackShare, which describes it as "a library for building interactive Web interfaces. It provides data-reactive components with a simple and flexible API."

Monaca, after separating its Onsen UI tool from its dependency on the AngularJS JavaScript framework last year, last week announced Onsen UI for Vue.

Onsen UI provides various ready-to-use UI components that follow iOS and Android UI guidelines and designs, including simple elements such as buttons and more complex elements such as menu navigation. Along with Angular (the 1.x and 2.x versions) and Vue.js, it supports the React JavaScript framework and Meteor.

"After months of grooming the Vue.js bindings to a sweet and stable spot, the Onsen UI team is happy to announce that our bindings for Vue.js are now available as a permanent product," Monaca developer Júnio Silva announced in a blog post last week.

"As the Vue community is growing bigger and bigger, if you were looking for the best mobile UI framework to build your Vue.js mobile apps with, look no further than this blog post," Silva said.

The new Vue.js-specific tool will let developers create hybrid apps (Web tech wrapped in a native container) and increasingly popular Progressive Web Apps, which leverage new technologies and techniques to rival the capabilities of native iOS and Android apps.

"Vue is a great framework that is growing quickly, even faster than Angular and React in terms of GitHub stars," said Monaca CEO Masa Tanaka in a news release. "While we offered preview version, we've got a lot of request to officially support it. We are excited that Vue developers can now easily create mobile apps using Onsen UI for Vue, in a way that's familiar to them."

Like Onsen UI (which has a GitHub repository), Vue.js is also open source and also available in its own GitHub repository, with nearly 60,000 stars, leading a Monaca spokesperson to note that 2017 has been called "the year of Vue.js."
