Open Source Couchbase Mobile Now Scales on Demand

Couchbase Inc. has launched a new version of its mobile-centric full stack data platform that adds scale-on-demand functionality.

Couchbase Mobile 1.4 was announced this week with a new component, Sync Gateway Accelerator, that reportedly lets developers increase system capacity by up to six times.

The open source Couchbase Mobile platform comprises: the Couchbase Lite NoSQL embedded database for mobile and Internet of Things (IoT) devices; the Couchbase Server that stores and manages data in the cloud; and the Couchbase Sync Gateway that synchronizes data between the two.

The new accelerator component was added to the Sync Gateway, designed to improve capacity by sharding the mutation feed that transmits data changes from the server to the clients.

"In Couchbase Mobile 1.4 the mutation feed from Couchbase Server can be sharded across multiple Sync Gateway Accelerator nodes to create a distributed channel cache," the company said in a blog post Monday.

"Each Sync Gateway uses the distributed channel cache to efficiently apply security filters for access control and create the changes feed for downstream clients," the company said. "Sync Gateway Accelerator can be scaled horizontally just like Couchbase Server and Couchbase Sync Gateway to create a cluster that handles up to 6x write capacity."

The company also announced improved support for LINQ (.NET Language-Integrated Query), providing the ability to natively query data in the Microsoft .NET Framework through the addition of "select," "where," "aggregate" and other keywords.

Couchbase, which started out as an open source database "for the Web era," open sources all of its offerings, the source code of which can be found on GitHub.
