Hortonworks Big Data Now on AWS

Hortonworks Inc. today announced a new Big Data offering for the Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS) cloud, offering enterprises a faster onramp for running Apache Hadoop, Spark and Hive workloads in the cloud.

The new Hortonworks Data Cloud for AWS will combine the most popular enterprise-grade capabilities of the company's flagship Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) with AWS hourly pay-as-you-go or annual billing options, the company said.

Hortonworks provides commercialized products and services based on open source technology such as Hadoop, Spark and Hive. The company is often characterized as one of the leading distributors of enterprise data offerings leveraging such technologies, along with Cloudera Inc. and MapR Technologies Inc.

The company previously embraced cloud computing as part of its "connected data architecture" and in June named Microsoft Azure HDInsight as its Premier Connected Data Platforms cloud solution.

It's now branching out to the largest public cloud services provider, offering on the AWS Marketplace two components of the new offering: Hortonworks Data Cloud - Controller Service and Hortonworks Data Cloud - HDP Services.

The new Big Data solution will let developers spin up pre-configured HDP-powered Hive and Spark clusters that are tuned to integrate with existing Amazon S3 (storage), Amazon RDS (relational database service) and Amazon EC2 (compute). That will provide "a highly prescriptive experience" for working with popular use cases such as: data science and exploration; data preparation and extract, transform and load (ETL); data analytics; and reporting, the company said.

Designed to enable data scientists, developers and end users to be more productive, the data cloud will provide them with more time to concentrate on processing and deriving business insights from data rather than configuring and running data platform infrastructure, according to Hortonworks.

"Businesses' demand for real-time decision making, gaining a competitive advantage and manageable costs are fueling three primary trends in the IT industry: cloud computing, the Internet of Things, and Big Data and analytics," the company said in a statement. "Hortonworks' unique connected data architecture approach addresses each trend by giving organizations the optimal footprint for agility, elasticity, cost and most importantly, drives real-time analytics. With Hortonworks Data Cloud for AWS, businesses can achieve insight into data faster and with greater flexibility than was previously possible."
