Cisco and NetApp yesterday enhanced their joint FlexPod portfolio, highlighted by the addition of FlexPod Select with Hadoop for dedicated data-intensive workloads.
The FlexPod portfolio is described as "a pre-designed and pre-validated base data center configuration" based on the Cisco Unified Computing System, with Cisco data center switches and NetApp storage components.
The burgeoning Big Data market was clearly key to the new initiative. "FlexPod supports the growing need to tie storage, networks, applications, and analytics (such as Big Data) into a more automated, responsive system that increases efficiency and lowers operational expense," the companies announced.
Describing the new FlexPod Select component, the joint announcment said it "will target data-intensive requirements of Hadoop-based Big Data applications in financial services, government, retail manufacturing, and other markets."
FlexPod Select with Hadoop is the first offering in the family. It features two validated configurations: Cloudera's Distribution Including Apache Hadoop and the Hortonworks Data Platform.
Cisco and NetApp claimed that FlexPod, launched in 2010, now has more than 2,400 customers and 900 channel partners in more than 35 countries.
