Amazon Web Services Adds SQL Server to Virtual Private Cloud

Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced on Thursday that its Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) service is now supporting Amazon RDS for SQL Server, along with other enhancements.

In addition to the new RDS (Relational Database Service) feature for SQL Server, AWS added support for static routing configuration for Virtual Private Network (VPN) connections. Before this, such connections had to use the Border Gateway Protocol. Now users can connect to the VPC while using devices that don't support BGP, such as those running Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2. A full list of supported gateway devices is available online.

The company also announced new automatic route propagation support, which simplifies creation and maintenance of connectivity to the Amazon VPC. "You can now configure automatic propagation of routes from your VPN and Direct Connect links to your VPC routing tables," the company said. "This feature simplifies the effort to create and maintain connectivity to Amazon VPC."

Regarding its new support for SQL Server, the company said, "The same functionality of Amazon RDS including managing backups, automatic failure detection and recovery, software patching, and ease of scaling your compute capacity based on your application demand, is now available in Amazon VPC."

Almost exactly one month ago, AWS announced the addition of VPC support for its Amazon RDS for Oracle Database service, along with new XML support and rapid Web application development functionality.
