Ingres and Pentaho Partner on Open Source BI

Ingres Corp. and Pentaho Corp. formed a partnership this month to address market demands for open source business intelligence (BI) products and services.

The partnership involves technology integration and joint marketing efforts, with a long-term view toward providing BI solutions.

"The large installed base of the Ingres database validates the technology strengths of the Ingres platform, and we look forward to partnering with Ingres to continue to drive production-ready open source BI integration in the future," stated Erik Hoogerhuis, Pentaho's vice president of business development, in a press release.

BI is a business decision-making process consisting of concepts, raw data and scenarios. It's evolved over the years into tasks routinely handled by software. Pentaho provides subscription-based open source implementations of BI tools, such as OLAP analysis, data mining and data integration.

Ingres produces an open source relational database solution for enterprise deployments, with an option for commercial licensing. The company was pegged by a 2006 Forrester Wave report as one of the open source market leaders, along with MySQL and PostreSQL.

The combined Ingres-Pentaho products will support real-time operational reporting for organizations, according to the press release. Organizations will have access to data analysis via dashboard technology in Pentaho's solution.

The products can work across multiple machines using Pentaho's ETL (extract, transform, and load) capabilities to feed data into a data warehouse supported by the Ingres database, according to the announcement.
