BEA bundles Motive self-management tools with WebLogic

Motive Inc., an Austin, Texas-based vendor of Java-based software tools for modeling, diagnosing and fixing computer problems, is moving into the J2EE market with an alliance with BEA Systems Inc. Under an agreement announced jointly by the companies this month, BEA will use Motive's modeling technology to provide self-management capabilities for WebLogic Server.

Developers and administrators will be able to use Motive's modeling and management tools to see how application changes will impact systems, and either prevent or fix problems before they bog down systems, said Mike Maples Jr., Motive's chief marketing and strategy officer. This will provide self-managing capabilities for WebLogic that will check J2EE application configurations and interdependencies, he added.

When included in the WebLogic platform, Motive tools will help IT departments to model the optimal state for an application, provide a snapshot of the current system, identify differences in application interaction following any changes and streamline problem diagnosis, Maples said.

Motive, which is included in 30 million products worldwide, has focused in the past on the telco, cable and PC hardware markets, Maples said. He said Hewlett-Packard uses his company's products for self-management of its PC products. Time Warner Cable uses Motive to help home users set up their broadband cable installations.

"J2EE-based applications are the next big market for self-management," Maples said.
