Modeling tools make increased use of XML

Computas NA Inc., Seattle, has brought out a new version of its Metis Enterprise modeling toolset that incorporates enhanced XML capabilities, according to company officials.
The tools, which operate with the Oracle database, take XML beyond its usual linear and hierarchical views to map relationships in "Enterprise Architecture models for decision-makers," said Bill Wright, Computas president and CEO.
For example, said Wright, Boeing is using his company's tools for supply-chain analysis relating airplane parts to vendors and locations to give managers a view of what they have and where it is.
The tools take advantage of the increasing use of XML data in the enterprise and can import any kind of XML data into the modeling process, which includes UML templates and content management, Wright explained.
The Metis Team Server running on Oracle is designed to protect the integrity of XML data by not allowing business users to directly change and update the database, he said. Users work with a copy and the XML database is only changed when a company-specified approval procedure is completed.
Developers can obtain an evaluation copy of the Metis Model Browser product by downloading it from the Computas Web site (www.computas.com), Wright said.
