.NET, SQL Server push Merant into Microsoft camp

Customer demand for SQL Server and .NET support is driving Merant Inc. (www.merant.com), the Hillsboro, Ore.-based SCM vendor to fully embrace the Microsoft world in the new release of its Dimensions change management product, a Merant spokesman said.
Merant has supported Oracle and IBM’s DB2 databases as the repository for its change management system, explained Ashley Owen, director of product marketing for Merant. But increasingly the Merant sales force and consultants find customers seeking Microsoft SQL Server support, he said.
That explained why Owen and his co-workers were at the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference (PDC) in Los Angeles last week with a demonstration of Merant Dimensions for Microsoft .NET. Merant claimed its new Microsoft-centric product is “the only enterprise change management solution that features native integration with Visual Studio .NET 2003, and full support for SQL Server 2000 and Windows Server 2003.”
Dimensions for Microsoft .NET, which was announced at PDC and is scheduled to emerge from beta before the end of this year, will have support for “Whidbey,” the new version of Visual Studio due out by the end of 2004, Owen said. It will also support “Yukon,” the next version of SQL Server, he added.
