A new look for ADT

With this issue, Application Development Trends unveils a new look that’s designed to improve our readability and better underscore our efforts to provide ever-improving insight into and in-depth coverage of subjects of vital importance to managers responsible for IT development operations.

For almost 15 years, ADT has stuck to a mission of examining and evaluating tools, technologies and trends in an objective way that helps you to do your job better. We pledge to continue that in a package that is easier to read, easier to navigate and that carries a distinct look. And to ensure that we maintain the straight and narrow, we will continue to periodically survey our readership to ensure that our coverage meets your wants and needs.

The new look also coincides with the start of objective monthly reviews of tools and technologies of importance to IT development managers. Senior Correspondent John K. Waters oversees the efforts by working with corporate developers as they try out a variety of new products. At the same time, ADT newcomer Mike Gunderloy, editor of our Developer Central e-newsletter, will be contributing regular dispatches to the review section.

Meanwhile, Editor-at-Large Jack Vaughan’s unique perspectives on development, integration and data issues will become a permanent fixture on our back page. Our feature pages will continue to provide insights on how your colleagues in corporate IT are tackling the issues many of you face by utilizing new technologies to build new apps, integrate modern systems and legacy back-ends, or find ways to get corporate data to those who need it as close to real time as possible. We’ll continue to bring you the views and opinions of expert columnists like David Chappell, Tony Baer, Uche Ogbuji, Wayne Eckerson and others. In the front of the magazine, we’ll take our own look at events, personalities and projects with the perspective of helping you to do your job better and advance your career.

And finally, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our crack design team of Michele Singh and Scott Rovin for their efforts in creating a design that more than meets the objectives of our editorial team.

This month’s cover story [“BAM”] looks at Business Activity Monitoring (BAM) which, according to author Johanna Ambrosio, combines some old and new technologies to provide users with real-time monitoring of business metrics. Observers tell Ambrosio that this emerging scheme has potential if used correctly.
