OEM pact said to boost handheld security

Psion Teklogix, Mississauga, Ontario, this week said it has signed an OEM agreement to integrate security software from Certicom Systems into its Netpad line of Windows CE .NET-based handheld computers. Officials contended that the movianVPN security software from Certicom, also based in Mississauga, can address many of the security concerns that have held back widespread corporate implementation of mobile data solutions.

''Security is an ever increasing focus for our customers who are demanding mobile computing solutions that provide easy and secure access to mission-critical applications and/or data,'' said Norbert Dawalibi, president of Psion Teklogix. The move to incorporate the external package was described as a cost-effective decision that can ''foster the adoption of wireless communication across all industries.''

Officials said utilizing the packaged security system simplifies the design and deployment of business wireless solutions, decreases implementation time and costs and thus can ultimately increase the likelihood of success. The Certicom system supports IPSec and other standards, and supports at least 12 gateway platforms, including Cisco and Nortel.

The Netpad systems are aimed at industrial applications such as field force automation and tracking, tracing and delivery processes across many industry sectors.
