In Brief: Distributed denial of service attack and more

A Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack was detected by Matrix NetSystems monitoring locations and others in North America this week. An attack on Monday targeted the 13 root DNS servers that provide worldwide address translation for the entire DNS network. Several Internet Service Providers (ISPs) saw an increase in latency coincident with this attack. Matrix NetSystems estimated that the most affected ISP DNS root servers included VeriSign Global Registry Services in two locations, and the U.S. DOD Network Information Center in Vienna, Va. At the peak of the attack, average reachability for the entire DNS network dropped below 94% from normal levels near 100%. On Tuesday, Matrix NetSystems gauged that reachability remained near 97% ... The resulting offerings will be marketed and sold by each company's respective brand and channels ... Microsoft and Siebel Systems have announced a multiyear global strategic alliance matching Siebel's ERP suites with Microsoft's .NET Web Services technology initiative. The alliance includes collaborative development, 'demand creation,' global sales and integrated support for enterprise customers.
