J2SE - now Java Platform Standard Edition 5.0. - updated at JavaOne

Details that point to a more mature Java are in store this week as Sun Microsystems features a new version of the Java 2 Platform at JavaOne in San Francisco.
Known at one time as Project Tiger, and dubbed J2SE 1.5 while in beta, the latest version of the basic Java platform takes a big leap up in version numbering as it is being called Java Platform Standard Edition 5.0.
The platform includes Java programming language updates focusing on ease-of-development, improved monitoring and management features, better support for client-side Java, and virtual machine enhancements. Improvements could spell reduced startup time and reduced memory footprint, while better performance should derive from new virtual machine auto-tuning traits.
A new Java profile for performance improves uptake and eases administrators’ burdens, said Joe Keller, vice president, Marketing for Java Web Services and Tools. “New interfaces are available for [gaining] remote access to the platform,” said Keller. As well, “there is a byte-code implementation, so [IT shops] can tune it, and so administrators can control it when it is running,” he said.
