Mendix Partners for No-Code App Deployment on Cloud Foundry

Mendix, a rapid application development company, teamed up with Pivotal Software Inc. to deploy cloud-native apps.

Mendix said the Pivotal Cloud Foundry Platform as a Service (PaaS) will be used to move apps built with its no-code, visual approach to production. Pivotal Cloud Foundry (PCF) is the company's commercial version of the open source cloud technology of the same name.

Mendix said it's also joining with Pivotal to further the open standard and has integrated with the open framework to smooth deployment of Mendix apps to any stack based on Cloud Foundry.

"Mendix and Pivotal are bringing a new level of speed and agility to the development and delivery of modern, cloud-native applications," Mendix said in a statement. "Using [the Mendix] point-and-click development capabilities, developers can rapidly build apps six times faster than traditional programming methods. With Pivotal Cloud Foundry, enterprises can now deploy these applications with ease to achieve secure, highly available and scalable operations."

To integrate the two technologies, the partners said an open source Mendix Cloud Foundry buildpack (available on GitHub) was created to transform apps into Cloud Foundry droplets. Buildpacks provision framework and runtime support for apps, while droplets are described as archives of ready-to-run apps.

In addition to Pivotal Cloud Foundry deployment, the integrated offering will provide one-click app deployment to PCF on the Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS) cloud or to Pivotal Web Services.

Developers will also have access to prebuilt app components from the Mendix marketplace to accelerate development.

Last fall, Mendix announced one-click integration with the cross-platform PhoneGap mobile app development framework as part of an update to its Mendix App Platform.
