MyEclipse 2014 Java IDE Released

Genuitec on Tuesday announced the availability of the next major upgrade of its MyEclipse Java EE integrated development environment (IDE). MyEclipse 2014 comes with full support for Java EE 7, enhanced REST Web Services, new mobile tools and JDK 1.7 support, among other new features.

MyEclipse is a modular IDE aimed at enterprise Java and Web developers who work primarily with IBM's WebSphere application and integration platform. One of the spotlight upgrades in this release is support for IBM's Liberty Profile 8.5, which comes in the MyEclipse Blue edition. The Liberty Profile is a lightweight WebSphere runtime for the cloud available on IBM's developerWorks resource network. It enables the WebSphere app server to provision only the features required by the application (or set of applications) deployed to the server.

The new version of the IDE is built on the latest Eclipse Kepler release (version 4.3.1). "Kepler" refers to this year's version of the annual synchronized launch of multiple Eclipse projects and project upgrades, the so-called Release Train, which was announced in June. Kepler comprised 71 open source projects, as well as the latest upgrade of the Eclipse Project.

MyEclipse 2014 adds a set of jQuery and HTML5 mobile tools designed to allow Java developers to "design once" with a single code base and configure apps for Android and iOS platforms (including iOS 7). The tool set includes an HTML5 Designer with a set of wizards to speed mobile app development.

Additionally, REST services have been enhanced in this release, and now allow for a "simpler engineering experience in HTML5," the company says. The REST support also adds classes to a project, creates Web services methods and allows users to point to an entity for Java Persistence API reverse engineering.

This release supports Java EE 7 server connectors to Tomcat 8, GlassFish 4 and Widlfly 8. It supports JavaScript enhancements; IBM XML binding file editors; updated Spring tools, with bug fixes and new editors; updated support for the Apache Maven Java build manager; and enhanced support for XHTML and Java ServerFaces.

Genuitec's MyEclipse is both a Java EE IDE and a Web development tool suite for the Eclipse platform. The company promotes the tool for developers using UML, JSP, XML, Struts, JSF and EJBs. It supports Ajax, Web Services development, Java Persistence, extended database support and application server integration. The company is a founding member of the Eclipse Foundation.
