Big Data Vendor Splunk Adds Java, Python SDKs

Splunk Inc. recently announced the addition of Java and Python software development kits (SDKs) for its big data, real-time operational intelligence platform.

The Splunk Enterprise software already has an SDK for JavaScript, and a PHP SDK is in public preview.

"The Splunk SDKs for Java, Javascript, PHP and Python are built on a fully documented and supported REST API and include documentation, code samples, resources and tools to help developers build on the Splunk platform," the company said in a news release.

The Splunk platform is designed collect and manage machine-generated big data such as Web site clickstreams and customer transactions and network traffic from servers and applications. It comprises three main components, including the Splunkd engine, the Splunk Web app framework that uses the engine, and the SDKs that use REST APIs and extensions.

Splunk said its SDKs let big data developers more quickly build enterprise-grade applications that index, search and manage data from any other application, using standard tools and familiar programming languages.

The Java SDK, for example, shows an example app built with NetBeans, while noting that the Eclipse and IntelliJ IDEs are also supported. The open source SDKs are released under an Apache v2.0 license and are available on GitHub.
