Adobe releases free public beta of XMP toolkit

Adobe Systems is pre-releasing the public beta of Adobe XMP Toolkit Version 4.0. The new technology provides desktop applications and publishing systems with a common system for managing file information.

New in the beta is the ability to embed critical status and standards information within popular file formats. For example, in auto page-layout system, price and SKU data can be added to a photograph file so it shows as a visible caption beneath a catalog image. Additionally, file handling data will be centralized for developers in Adobe Bridge.

The company claims the new technology will help users comply with International Press Telecommunications Council standards when managing XMP elements embedded in image files. The IPTC's Core standard is based on Adobe XMP.
