Good Discussion on JavaLobby

In a moment of shameless self-promotion, I posted my last blog entry onto JavaLobby; and it’s turning into a good discussion about the pros and cons of a component repository for Java.
One of the issues raised is that the mindset in Java is just different from the VB/Delphi/.NET worlds, and that – given its “code-from-the-ground-up” design ethos, Java developers just sort of expect to have to write their own custom components, or to lobby Sun to enhance the core Swing component set. Of course, that places a great burden on one company to keep an entire industry well-fed.
On the other hand, there is some interest in a central component marketplace. I could see it being exposed via web services, so that it can be accessed through a variety of rich client front-ends and IDE plug-ins.
Done right, it could be a huge thing (in developer take-up, hopefully not in memory footprint!)
