Covalent announces support for Apache Geronimo 1.0

Open-source solution provider Covalent Technologies will offer full commercial support for Apache Geronimo 1.0, an open-source J2EE application server developed and recently made available by the Apache Software Foundation and distributed under the Apache license. Covalent already supports Apache's Axis Web Services Framework, HTTP Web Server, and Tomcat Application Server.

As part of the announcement, Covalent introduced a strategic partnership with Virtuas Open Source Solutions. Virtuas, an open-source professional services organization, has expertise working with Apache Geronimo and maintains close ties to the Apache Geronimo community of developers. Under terms of the partnership, Virtuas will provide Covalent with back-line support for Apache Geronimo along with strategic migration and educational services to assist companies transitioning to best-of-breed open-source solutions.

"Apache Geronimo, now a fully certified J2EE platform, is competitive with other J2EE application servers and should be considered by customers when choosing a J2EE solution," says Richard Monson-Haefel, an analyst with The Burton Group and co-founder of the Apache Geronimo project. "However, we've been concerned about support services available for Geronimo. IBM Gluecode aside, there have not been a lot of commercial services offered around the project. This move by Covalent is promising. Expert commercial support is extremely important to the future of the Geronimo platform."
