Macrovision buys InstallShield

Digital rights management specialist Macrovision Corp. has signed a definitive agreement to acquire "the assets and operations" of InstallShield Corp., maker of software for program installation, packaging and updating. Macrovision said the deal represents a $76 million cash transaction, with an additional payment of up to $20 million due, depending on InstallShield’s performance after the purchase.

“Our software developer customers have told us that they want seamless solutions that will allow them to price, package, install and update their software,” Bill Krepick, president and CEO of Macrovision, said in a statement.

Macrovision develops and markets digital rights management, copy protection and electronic license management technologies for the consumer software, enterprise software, home video and music industries.
