Start-up helps MOM keep an eye on Web services

Service Integrity Inc., a Newton, Mass.-based developer of XML/Web services monitoring and analysis software, is demonstrating how it fits into the Microsoft vision of secure Web services at the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference (PDC) this week.

Just a year old, Service Integrity (www.serviceintegrity.com) offers a Web services monitoring product called SIFT, which was certified for the .NET platform in June. This week at PDC in Los Angeles, the vendor announced that that SIFT will provide a Management Pack plug-in for Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM).

MOM is Microsoft’s GUI monitor for management, monitoring and alerting, reporting, and trend analysis. The MOM 2000 version is scheduled to be replaced by MOM 2004. According to Microsoft, MOM 2004 will extend its management capabilities to the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 platform, including the Active Directory and the Microsoft .NET Framework, as well as Microsoft Windows Server System integrated server software, including Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft BizTalk Server and Microsoft SQL Server.

The SIFT plug-in will provide monitoring for Web services business and operations flows, according to a Service Integrity spokesperson.

SIFT can monitor the flow of information in a Web services application and provide alerts if something is going wrong, explained Service Integrity’s Bill Jordan, who was demonstrating the product on the PDC show floor. He pointed to the example of data streaming in packets and said SIFT will detect if one of the packets is missing and send an alert to an administrator. It is the kind of Web services error that, undetected, could cause a major problem in transaction processing.
