IBM updates developerWorks Web services toolkit

IBM this week disclosed plans for updating its WebSphere Software Developer Kit (WSDK) for Web Services. WSDK 5.1 is currently being tested by developers on Big Blue's developerWorks Web site, officials said.

Tools on developerWorks can be downloaded at the early stages of development prior to the point where IBM requires licensing. The developerWorks site also provides developers with an opportunity to have input into IBM's research and development, according to a company spokesman.

WSDK 5.1 is designed to ease Web services integration of core business applications for use inside the enterprise and potentially outside as well, the spokesman noted. It provides support for all current Web services standards, including SOAP 1.1, WSDL 1.1, UDDI 2.0, JAX-RPC 1.0, EJB 2.0 and the new "Final Version" of WS-I Basic Profile 1.0.

IBM claims its Web services tools are gaining "developer momentum," as the previous version of the WebSphere toolkit, WSDK 5.0, had reached 10,000 downloads from developerWorks as of this past July. Developers in the U.S., U.K., China, Japan and India have downloaded WSDK, said the spokesperson.

Other Web services development tools available through IBM's Web sites include a recently upgraded WebSphere Studio suite of tools with support for WS-I Basic Profile, an Emerging Technologies Toolkit 1.1 (ETTK), Web Services Toolkit (WSTK) for Mobile Devices, as well as a set of best practices for implementing Web services standards.
