Sybase partners for fast PowerBuilder GUI Web conversion

Appeon 2.5 can be used by developers to deploy existing PowerBuilder applications to the Web, essentially with a click of a button, explained Loren Corbridge, senior product manager at Sybase.

For the past few years, some PowerBuilder shops have re-architected legacy client/server applications to extend them to the Web, she said.

"We've had PowerBuilder customers doing this for several years by doing things like putting JSPs in front of their Data Window [a key PB technology that creates front-ends and quick transformation of data out of the database and into the client/server application]," Corbridge explained. "We've had people doing their own re-architecting and using our middleware and deploying into the Web."

But other organizations, which had developed client/server applications in PowerBuilder, were asking Sybase to provide a faster, easier way to do the conversions, she added.

Sybase, which had been reselling the Appeon product for the past year, began to see the value of making it part of its own product offering, giving birth to this week's release of Appeon 2.5 for PowerBuilder.

"When Appeon came along, we saw this as the faster, easier solution for client/server to Web conversion]," Corbridge said. "It's essentially a deployment platform for the Web for PowerBuilder client/server applications. It will allow you to take a client/server application and deploy it into a browser."
