XML Web Services One Conference briefs

[MARCH 11, 2003/ADT'S PROGRAMMERS REPORT] - First it has to work, then it has to work faster. That
has been the story of computing since the beginning. These days, improving Java
performance continues to be an area of interest for many developers. At the XML
Web Services One Conference in Santa Clara, Calif., Ethan Henry discussed
various performance and scalability bottlenecks that must be surmounted, now
that organizations depend more on Java.
Henry, senior product manager at Sitraka (now part of
Quest Software), told his audience that there are several distinct ''gotchas''
to be mindful of when developing J2EE systems. ''Single-threaded'' thinking, misappropriation of shared resources, lack of respect for
inter-component interactions or ignoring opportunities to cache at any of the
three major system levels (presentation, data access and application
tier) are key issues.
