Quest updates Java component suite

[PROGRAMMERS REPORT, November 19, 2002] -- Quest Software Inc. has announced the release of JClass ServerViews 3.0, a set of Java server-side components that now offer XML support for Web services developers. This is the first Quest component offering since the firm agreed last month to acquire Canadian Java specialist Sitraka. That deal closed Nov. 1.

Included in JClass ServerViews are components supporting dynamic charting and PDF document generation from a J2EE application server to the browsers of a full network of users. All JClass ServerViews components can now load and save data and properties as XML, enabling Web services developers to more easily work with components.

Java charting moves further into the Web services space with this product launch, as JClass ServerViews includes a visual report design tool.

''Many people want to port from a rich client to a thin client,'' said Michael Bailey, JClass product manager, Quest Software. Server-side components for complex renderings naturally help in this regard.

''The notion of who is a data consumer is changing,'' explained Bailey. ''Now they are often part of groups that are not inside the firewall.'' Meanwhile, as Web services and Java are employed to create systems, PDFs are a popular output mechanism, especially in banking and financial services, where document integrity is a prime concern.

JClass ServerReport and JClass ServerChart can now generate language-specific content for each user. Further, the server component enables developers to generate PDF documents that include only the specifically required font metrics, said Quest's Bailey.
