Amazon adds Java for MOM

Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com) has moved to extend its Tibco Rendezvous (http://www.tibco.com) messaging software into the Java world by using Java framework and driver technology from Milford, Mass.-based SpiritSoft (http://www.spiritsoft.com).

Michael Carr, software platform manager at Amazon, said the SpiritWave Open JMS Framework and JMS driver tools from SpiritSoft allows the firm to continue to utilize the Tibco middleware while adding support for Java-based applications. The toolset is said to leverage Java Message Service (JMS), XML and caching technologies to enable the integration of legacy systems and proprietary middleware. Carr said Amazon.com sought to extend the functionality of its existing enterprise messaging system from Tibco and connect it to new Java-based applications.

The spread of proprietary message-oriented-middleware solutions from Tibco, as well as those from the likes of IBM (MQSeries) and Microsoft (MSMQ), has left development organizations unable to utilize newer technologies like Java and open-source tools. Observers say many organizations have built proprietary drivers to add support, but packaged systems like SpiritWave are giving development managers new options.

The SpiritSoft toolset can provide JMS support directly on top of proprietary MOMs via vendor-specific drivers, the company said. The drivers eliminate the need for IT developers to build and deploy a secondary messaging bus and MOM bridging.
