Lotus adds J2EE support

[JANUARY 30, 2002] -- Lotus Development Corp. General Manager Al Zollar told attendees at the firm's Lotusphere user conference yesterday that the Notes and Domino messaging and collaboration products are moving closer to the
technologies of parent IBM by adding support for Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE).
Zollar noted the move is part of a process started last year to
turn all Lotus offerings into Web services applications that can be
integrated with the software offerings of IBM and other suppliers.
Observers expected the move to J2EE since the Lotus organization was
shifted from an independent entity into IBM's Software Group more
than a year ago.
At Lotusphere, officials also said:
* That the firm has signed agreements with Cisco Systems Inc. and
Captaris Inc. calling for Lotus to develop a version of Domino
that is compatible with Cisco and Captaris communications solutions,
providing a unified interface to voice and e-mail messaging clients,
regardless of the client deployment strategy; and
* The first beta version of Lotus Notes and Domino 6 (code-named Rnext)
will be available within 30 days. The product is targeted for customer
shipment by September 2002.
