Iona: Back to the future

Iona tomorrow will take the wraps on a strategy to return to its Orbix roots at a press gathering in San Francisco. Officials said the firm plans to formally unveil Orbix E2A e-business platform, described as the next phase in the company's Web services integration strategy. The new system incorporates Iona's Web services integration platform and Orbix CORBA object request broker which can work together or independently.
The new offering is designed to provide seamless interoperability with standards-based offerings from other vendors, and can deliver Web services based on J2EE, .NET and CORBA technologies, officials said.
The press conference will include executives from several firms pledging to support the technology. The supporters include Microsoft, Nordstrom.com, Zurich Insurance, HotJobs.com, Pricewaterhouse Coopers Consulting, SAIC and KPMG, Iona officials said.
Paul Onnen, CTO at Nordstrom.com, describes the new system as "truly a next-generation business integration solution. It has enabled us to quickly and easily implement an end-to-anywhere business solution that connects our supply/demand chain and reduces order-processing time from as much as an hour to less than one second."
Iona has significantly altered its pricing strategy in an effort to broaden its customer base quickly. Pricing for both platforms starts at $495 per development license and $2,500 per CPU for a deployment license. Both are slated to ship in mid-December.
