IoT Analytics Lead New HP Big Data Initiatives

HP announced a revamp of its Vertica SQL database analytics platform -- adding high-speed Internet of Things (IoT) processing -- as part of several new products and services unveiled yesterday at its Big Data conference in Boston.

The new Vertica offering, codenamed "Excavator," enhances its Haven Big Data Platform, the company said.

"This latest version of HP Vertica enables organizations to quickly ingest and analyze high-speed streaming data, from various sources, including IoT applications, and provides enhanced SQL analytics and performance to Hadoop," the company said in a statement.

That new capability leverages the open source Apache Kafka distributed messaging system for near-real-time streaming data analytics. "This capability delivers actionable insight for a wide range of use cases, including manufacturing process control, supply chain optimization, healthcare monitoring, financial risk management and fraud detection," HP said in another statement.

HP also announced new advanced machine log text search functionality, which it said will help organizations identify -- and predict -- application failures and security/access issues.

With help from a partnership with Hadoop distributor Hortonworks Inc., the new Vertica also provides native file support for widely used Hadoop format such as ORC and Parquet. Hortonworks collaborated on a new access layer that lets SQL queries work on ORC files, resulting in a claimed speed boost.

HP also open sources its Flex Table "schema on-need" technology to better work with any kind of semi-structured data.

The company also announced it will integrated Vertica with Apache Spark, the up-and-coming open source cluster computing framework, which has been getting loads of attention and adoption in the Big Data space. "This will enable accelerated data transfer between Vertica and Spark, allowing organizations to take full advantage of their Spark-based deployments. This future capability will enable the developer community to build their models in Spark and run them in Vertica for high-speed and sophisticated analytics."

General availability of all the Haven offerings is scheduled for this fall.
