OpenLogic Beefs Up Open Source Offerings

The library includes more AJAX-related solutions, with additions such as Dojo, Google Web Tookit and ICEFaces. In addition, OpenLogic has added support for open source software using Sun's Solaris 8 and 9 operating systems (support already exists for Solaris 10).

Essentially, OpenLogic provides the kind of support for open source software that many companies have come to expect with commercial software, as summed up by one of OpenLogic's bloggers:

"What we consistently hear is that companies need and want the same services for open source software that they get from proprietary software.  Hence the rise of open source companies…."

OpenLogic first conducts a certification process before adding open source software to its library. Currently, the library contains "302 open source software packages, with more than 1,200 versions of those packages," according to an OpenLogic press release.

OpenLogic has an initial screening process for all open source software that it considers. The company examines a solution's viability and conducts licensing and legal assessments, as well as functional, support and technical assessments. Solutions in the OpenLogic library then undergo technical testing and documentation before gaining full certification status.

The company's open source solutions are backed by technical phone support and a group of developers called the "OpenLogic Expert Community." OpenLogic's customers also get periodic software upgrades. According to OpenLogic's Web site, the company typically drops a solution from its library if an update isn't issued once per year.

OpenLogic also ensures indemnification for companies against intellectual property issues associated with open source software licensing.
