Composite Enhances Data Virtualization for SOAs

Composite Software is releasing version 4.5 of its Java-based Composite Information Server (CIS) product. In addition, the company is introducing a new product that works with its server to help scale data service deployments called Composite Active Cluster.
Composite specializes in "data virtualization" for "information-as-a-service" applications in service-oriented architectures (SOAs). The information-as-a-service term typically means accessing information in relational databases, as well as in documents, spreadsheets and various legacy systems, and making that information available in a business-friendly manner.
The company supplies its CIS to companies needing to optimize data access and business intelligence, such as investment banks. The solution supports companies with disparate data sources located around the globe. Composite also provides its solutions to enterprise software vendors, such as Cognos, Informatica and BMC.
The virtualization aspect provides a single view across multiple database silos. The company claims to not use the traditional extract, transform and load (ETL) method of handling data. Rather, Composite uses the phrase "virtualize, abstract and integrate" to describe its method of handling data services.
For its CIS 4.5 release, Composite has made improvements in both virtualization and management capabilities. The solution now enables management via a Web-based server management console, which can be used to monitor and manage "globally deployed clusters of CIS servers," according to an announcement issued by Composite. The company has also added "improved security management capabilities" for handling large groups of enterprise users.
The separate Composite Active Cluster product works with the CIS 4.5 to improve "data virtualization and data reuse capabilities," according to the announcement.
The two products will be generally available by the end of this month.
