Aberdeen research points to SOA's suite spot

A 2006 report from Boston-based market researcher Aberdeen Group shows 90 percent of survey respondents say their companies are adopting service-oriented architectures.
The report, 'Enterprise Service Bus and SOA Middleware,' which is based on a survey of 120 information technology and business professionals, indicates a growing acceptance of SOA, especially at companies with $1 billion or more in revenue.
Enterprises pursuing SOA prefer to adopt full-function application suites that include ESBs. Mid-size and large companies often implement SOA as an extension of their enterprise resource platforms, or adopt SOA middleware for mission critical applications. Smaller companies opt for Web services with lightweight integration, according to Aberdeen research.
"Redesigning business processes, high IT integration costs, and customization challenges are eating up 40 percent of the IT budget in integration expenditures," said Peter S. Kastner, VP and research director for Enterprise Integration at Aberdeen, in a statement. "SOA is broadly seen as a real technology step forward, with the largest companies, who have the biggest integration problems, leading the way."
