In Brief: Kumar out at CA; Microsoft considered merger with SAP; and more

* Last week, Computer Associates (CA) International announced that Chief Software Architect Sanjay Kumar will immediately leave the company. Kumar and other CA managers have been under scrutiny as Federal prosecutors have looked into the company's sales and accounting practices. Kumar stepped down as CA's chairman and chief executive officer in April and was replaced by interim Chief Executive Officer Ken Cron. In a statement, Kumar said it had "become clear that his continued role at CA is not helping the Company's efforts" to move forward.
* Microsoft confirmed that late last year it initiated preliminary discussions with SAP AG to merge the two companies. Microsoft divulged this news ahead of its anticipated disclosure as part of U.S. Justice Department proceedings aimed at blocking Oracle's takeover of PeopleSoft Inc.
* Neon Systems Inc. has reported a definitive agreement to acquire Toronto-based mainframe integration specialist InnerAccess Technologies Inc. The stock-and-cash deal was valued at about $3.8 million at the time of the announcement.
