Outsourcing on the upswing

A new survey has found that more companies are outsourcing project management or bringing in consultants to complete projects.
Conducted by the Center for Business Practices (CBP), Havertown, Pa., the "Project Management: State of the Industry" survey polled 1,000 project professionals and senior executives at Global 2000 companies. Thirty-nine percent of responding companies said they currently outsource project management functions or are considering doing so, while more than half use consultants to either manage projects or augment staffing.
Broken down by task, the survey found that the most commonly outsourced functions are project delivery, project management training and complete project management.
"Most companies do not have a large enough in-house staff to successfully accomplish project objectives," said Jim Pennypacker, director of the CBP and former head of the knowledge and wisdom center at the Project Management Institute. "By outsourcing project management functions, companies can achieve a higher project success rate at a lower cost."
