VA Software forges ahead with tool suite update

[MAY 17, 2002] - Fremont, Calif.-based VA Software Corp. has unveiled SourceForge Enterprise Edition 3.1, an updated version of its collaborative software development platform. Upgrades to the software are intended to better position SourceForge for enterprise implementation.
VA Software, formerly VA Linux, exited the Linux systems business last year to focus on SourceForge and its Open Source Development Network.
The Web-oriented SourceForge 3.1 software, which is scheduled to ship in May, now runs on Solaris as well as Linux. It integrates with several popular software configuration management (SCM) tools that developers currently use to manage code.
The software package also introduces enhancements to SourceForge's project administration functionality. These include project templates that speed new project creation; new statistical report templates and scheduled report distribution via e-mail; and more finely regulated role-based access control.
"We've developed [SourceForge] into an enterprise-focused solution for corporate customers," said Dan Bressler, director of product marketing, VA Software. He noted that the corporations he encounters tend to have more than one SCM solution in place. Moreover, "organizations that have existing SCM solutions are interested in collaborative solutions such as those SourceForge offers," he said.
SCM support now includes Perforce and Rational ClearCase. The new version also offers more advanced search and reporting features, new data export capabilities and improved bug and issue tracking.
