In Brief: Automated testing, and keeping the Web royalty-free

IBM Rational has released Rational Rapid Developer, the first offering since Rational was bought by Big Blue in late 2002. Called an "architected rapid application development environment (ARAD)", Rapid Developer is said to make it easier to create scalable, enterprise-class J2EE business applications. Along with the new release, Rational has also expanded its Extended Development Experience with the new XDE Tester and an enhanced XDE Developer.
Parasoft has introduced .Test 1.0, an automated unit testing tool for preventing errors in Web services built with Microsoft's .NET Framework. Company officials say .Test allows testing without requiring developers to write test scenarios, which can speed the development of sound, portable code.
The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has released a policy that is intended to keep even patented Web technologies royalty-free. Under the policy, participants in the development of a W3C Recommendation will have to agree to license essential claims on a royalty-free basis.
