UDDI gets a committee

UDDI is often the missing link when developers talk about their Web services implementations. They will explain how they are using SOAP. They will explain how they are using WSDL. But when asked about the UDDI component, they often say they haven't gotten around to that.

Observers predict that UDDI will likely move forward now that the standard has its own technical committee at OASIS. The committee members include some of the big names in software and Web application development with BEA Systems, Computer Associates, Fujitsu, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Intel, IONA, Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, Sun Microsystems, TIBCO, VeriSign and WebMethods among the collaborators.

Noting that UDDI ''provides a foundation for the infrastructure needed to drive the success of Web services,'' IBM's Tom Bellwood, co-chair of the OASIS UDDI Specification Technical Committee, said the new OASIS group will work on both standardizing the UDDI specification and developing best practices for its use by developers.

Microsoft's Luc Clement, another co-chair of the committee, added that advancing UDDI in this way ''will help accelerate adoption and benefit the entire industry,''

Participation in the new UDDI committee is open to all organizations and individuals, according to OASIS, which will also host an open mail list for public comment on its proposals.
