Business apps with service in mind

According to Gartner analyst Charles Abrams, Service-Oriented Business Applications (or SOBAs—a Gartner term) are the best way of thinking about SOAs and their components. SOBAs consist of distributed implementations of business processes. Abrams says unleashing the full potential of SOBAs requires standards that can define, manage and implement a wide range of business processes that are:

  • Internal to one business entity as well as external across business entities
  • Centralized (with one party controlling the overall flow of interactions) and collaborative (multiple parties participating in a process that has no single owner)
  • Concrete (processes tied to specific resources, events and machine and data models) as well as abstract
