Java PaaS Provider Jelastic Updates Platform

Java-based Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) provider Jelastic has released a new version of its cloud hosting platform. Version 1.9.1, available now, comes with fairly long list of upgrades that includes, among others, the ability to regulated the sequence of balance charging, improvements to the config manager, PostgreSQL 9.2.4 support, the ability to schedule backups for end user databases, and the ability to generate direct URL for solution deployment.

If there's a spotlight new feature in this release it's the new CRON Scheduler, which is designed to allow users to schedule jobs to run periodically at certain times and dates. The scheduler can also be used to run programs at specified times, and to back up databases or specific tables directly from the configuration files."

But a close second is probably the PostgreSQL support, which provides synchronous and cascading replication; unlogged tables, per-column; and collations, among other capabilities. This version also generates notifications about running out of resources (Mem, Disk, CPU).

Jelastic is a Java- and PHP-based cloud hosting platform designed to run any Java application in the cloud without code or language changes, and without the need to write for specific APIs. It supports any JVM-based app, including apps developed with Java 6, Java 7, JRuby, Scala and Groovy.

Earlier this month, the company announced the creation of a plug-in for the NetBeans integrated development environment (IDE), which allows users of the Jelastic platform to access their development, test, and production deployments from within the Java IDE. That plugin is included in this release.

The company also provides plug-ins for Maven, Ant, Hudson, and Jenkins. The company recently added Apache TomEE to the list of application servers supported by the platform. That list also includes Tomcat (6 and 7), GlassFish and Jetty. Jelastic also supports three SQL databases: MariaDB, MySQL and PostgreSQL; and supports the non-SQL databases MongoDB and CouchDB.

Palo Alto, Calif.-based Jelastic was founded in 2010 by Hivetext, a Zhytomyr, Ukraine-based startup focused on Java application development in the cloud. Ruslan Synytsky, founder and CEO of Jelastic, has said that his company's flagship platform is the first Java PaaS to provide "full application compatibility and developer control," and "the only choice for Java developers" who want to avoid lock-in.
